Cultures serve several important social and psychological functions. In other words, cultures are useful because they allow members of a group, community, or society to meet important goals and motives. The functions of culture are discussed by Chiu and Hong (2006). In this activity, we will focus on three of these functions. The goal of the activity is to demonstrate that you can illustrate each function using a culture that you are very familiar with or have a strong interest in. Remember that, in this course, we use a broad definition of culture that applies to cultures defined based on all kinds of distinctions (not just ethnic or national cultures).
