Are there real ethical challenges in restoration? While we tend to consider restoration projects inherently good and valuable, they can bring up ethical concerns. From the unintentional killing of wildlife during prescribed burns to the notion of a highly engineered ecosystem being called “natural.” One of the most contentious questions in the field of restoration ecology is the following: If we say we can restore an ecosystem successfully, then why should we protect pristine (or close to pristine) ecosystems?
